Nigel Hitchcock’s The Snakeranch Sessions has garnered something of an underground following since its initial release in 1997.

One reason for the album’s enduring praise is its use of seemingly simple musical material, standards – although many musicians would never class some of these standards as simple! As with all of the great jazz albums that have used standard tunes as a platform for performance, it is the inventive nature in how Hitchcock and his group approach the tunes – added intros and codas, extended chord sequences, varying instrumentation and structure – that gives it its individual appeal. Add to this the virtuosity of the musicians involved and the Snakeranch Sessions cements itself as a flawless and gleaming gem amongst the very finest British jazz releases.
