Album Information:
The idea of featuring the music of the late, great, saxophone virtuosos Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott came in a long, ‘after gig’, conversation between Mornington Lockett and Martin Drew, who had both played with Ronnie; Mornington suggested putting a band together to play the music of The Jazz Couriers who were together from April 1957 to August 1959.

There was, and still is, a large audience of people and musicians who are very familiar with the original Couriers and, thankfully, they showed tremendous enthusiasm for this band. The object was to play some scintillating jazz music, such as has rarely been heard in the UK, since the old Couriers. Ronnie and Tubby never ‘took any prisoners’, as the expression goes, and neither did Mornington, Nigel, and the rhythm section! Winning the "Small Group" section of the Hamlet British Jazz Awards 2002 further recognised how dynamic and exciting Celebrating The New Couriers were.

This Volume 2 CD recorded in July 2002 underlines the excitement, virtuosity, and cohesiveness of "Celebrating The Jazz Couriers". The spirit and feel-good factor of the live performance is captured here in abundance, proving that this band has become one of the great jazz groups around today. The title track of this CD, "Through The Night Roared The Overland Express, The Bridge Was Out, A Madman At The Wheel," was written by Ronnie Scott himself.

“The balance of this quintet really cannot be faulted. It's refreshing to hear a quintet make no apologies about ripping into virtuoso arrangements with no concern about breaking new ground. It swings, and swings hard: and that's what the Couriers were about.”
