Album Information:
The opening title track sets the straight-ahead, swinging
tone of Something’s Gotta Give, an album blending warmth, fun, and poignant
reminiscence.
Moule offers the listener 14 songs to enjoy, and this idea
of really getting your moneys worth, whilst never sacrificing the quality of
the work, is a nice trend throughout her output. The tunes themselves are a mix
of Fran Landesman /Simon Wallace originals and Johnny Mercer standards from the
great American songbook.
The lyrical brilliance of Landesman – she has that golden
ability of subtlety evoking the melancholic emotions of a golden age – and the
song-writing talents of Moule’s partner, Wallace, fuse to create modern British
standards that Moule utilises to convey her own vocal talents. Moules natural tone
is full-bodied yet it has the nimbleness to reach those high intervals with
ease, in turn captivating the listener with her vocal agility.
Moule has surrounded herself with the cream of British jazz,
so there is plenty to satisfy any jazz fan more inclined to favour strict
instrumentation. The saxophonist Pete Wareham solos with aplomb throughout, as
does the guitarist Jim Mullen. There are also great turns from the trumpeters
Mark Armstrong and Steve Fishwick – specifically on You’re So Now. Underneath
all this the consistent high quality of drummer Paul Robinson and bassist Mick
Hutton ensure the foot-tapping groove never fails.
This Linn Records release is a must for any fan of not
just Sarah Moule, but British jazz in general.
